The Philadelphia Flyers have announced they have placed former Nashville Predators forward Ryan Johansen on unconditional waivers for purposes of contract termination due to a “material breach” of contract. The Collective Bargaining Agreement requires a player to be placed on unconditional waivers prior to contract termination.

There have been no further reports as to what this breach may have been. If I were to guess, this has something to do with Johansen’s injury situation last season, which prohibited the Flyers from sending Johansen to the AHL or buying out his contract earlier this summer.

Assuming all things equal, this contract termination would release the $4 million dead salary cap hit the Predators would have otherwise faced this season.

The Predators retained 50% of Johansen’s salary when they dealt him to the Colorado Avalanche last summer. His contract still had two years and $16 million remaining at the time of the trade.
